When people begin thinking about their next home, the first question is usually, “Where do I want to live?”
Should we stay in the neighbourhood? Move closer to the children? Consider a condo? Look at a retirement community? Find something smaller? Perhaps move somewhere warmer?
Those are important questions. But there’s another question that needs to come first:
How do I want to live?
It’s a simple distinction, but it can completely change the way you think about your next chapter.
Our homes don't suddenly become the wrong home. They simply continue doing the job they were designed to do. Think back to when you bought yours. You were choosing a home for the life you were building—perhaps with bedrooms for children, a backyard, a busy kitchen and space for family life. And it probably served you beautifully. But life changes. Children grow up, careers end, retirement arrives, and priorities shift. The surprising part is that our homes don't notice any of this. They still need the yard maintained, the stairs climbed, the roof inspected and the furnace serviced. We adapt, often without realizing that we're spending more time looking after the house than the house is looking after us.
That's when a different question becomes important: What is my home helping me do today? Is it giving you the freedom to travel, spend time with family and pursue hobbies—or has maintaining it quietly become another full-time job? Because your home should support your life, not become your life.
Your home was designed for your past; your next chapter deserves a home designed for your future.
After more than 25 years of helping people navigate major life transitions, we’ve learned that people rarely begin a conversation because they simply want to buy or sell a house. Life has changed. The children have grown up. Retirement has arrived. Travel has become more important. Grandchildren have entered the picture. Perhaps there’s a new interest, a long-delayed hobby or simply a desire for more freedom and less maintenance.
And suddenly, the home that once fit beautifully may no longer fit the life.
That doesn’t automatically mean it’s time to move. Sometimes the right answer is to stay. Sometimes it’s to renovate, simplify or make a few changes that allow the home to work better.
But before making any of those decisions, it helps to imagine the life you actually want to live. Notice that when we imagine a life we love, we rarely picture the house itself. We picture experiences, relationships, freedom and purpose. And yet our homes have an enormous influence on whether we have the time, energy and freedom to enjoy those things.
A home can support your life—or gradually become your life.
The goal of rightsizing isn't to find the smallest home or give up the things you love. It’s about creating alignment between how you want to live and the home you choose to live in.
That means asking some important questions.
- Is your home giving you the freedom you want?
- Is the maintenance still worth the time and energy it requires?
- Are you using the space you have?
- Does your location support the activities and relationships that matter most?
- And perhaps most importantly, are you making decisions based on the life you want ahead—or simply continuing the life you’ve always had?
There’s another benefit to asking these questions early: choice.
Planning ahead doesn’t mean you’ve decided to move. It means you’re giving yourself the opportunity to explore while you still have time, energy and options.
You can visit different communities. Look at different types of housing. Understand your financial position. Think about what you would take with you and what you might finally be ready to let go of. You can even decide that staying exactly where you are is the right choice.
The important thing is that the decision is yours.
Because your next move shouldn't simply be about finding a different address. It should be about creating a home that supports the life you want to live.
Before you ask, “Where do I want to live?” ask yourself, “How do I want to live?”
